A funny thing happens to a lot of people we coach … after a while, they get so good at questioning what they want out of life (and often rebelling against the norm), that their rebellion goes a little too far.

It’s funny that it’s necessary, but we’re giving you permission not to rebel in this week’s #ClarityGem.

THIS WEEK, WE WANT YOU TO KNOW:

conventional

APPLY IT TO YOUR OWN LIFE:

A lot of us naturally chafe against “the way things are.” It’s not just a young-people thing, of course, but there’s no denying that Millennials are really good at bucking convention and denying the mainstream, when we choose to.

If we don’t want to own a home, we can rent. If we don’t want to work for other people, we’ll start our own business. If we don’t want to have kids, we’re not going to have them just ‘cuz someone else says we should. We tend to know what’s necessary, for us.

But we’re finding that some of our clients are coming up against an interesting problem … what happens when I want something (gasp!) conventional or (shocker!) traditional? Do I really want this? Or am I just (shudder) conforming?

We want you rebels out there to know … it’s OK. Really. You’re allowed to want to work a 9-5. You’re allowed to want 2.5 kids and a lovely home, complete with mortgage. You’re allowed to want “mainstream” things … it’s highly improbable that every single one of your desires will be opposite of the norm.

Big caveat, of course: As long as you want them for your reasons, not because you think you “should” or because it’s “what’s done.” If the thought of having them lights you up … it’s not wrong to want what you want.

So no, you’re not a sell-out, or a fake, or a boring conformist for genuinely wanting something traditional. You can only be a sell-out if you choose convention for the wrong reasons.

twitter-birdHaving a desire that’s conventional doesn’t necessarily make it wrong. #ClarityGems

WHAT #CLARITYGEMS ARE ALL ABOUT:

Sometimes it’s just better to avoid long blog posts and cut straight to the point!

Think of #ClarityGems as your weekly shake of the good ‘ole Magic 8 Ball … you never know what might bubble up and how it might be exactly what you need to hear today.

And instead of just a beautiful, inspirational, and shareable image (which is a nice start), we’re giving you some quick thoughts about how to interpret it … because inspiration without action is pretty, but kind of anti-climatic.

Tweet it, share it on Instagram, or forward it along to someone who needs to hear it today … and tag us (@ClarityonFire) to let us know how this Gem is inspiring you!

Much Love,

Rachel + Kristen
