There are some truths that, after you hear them, seem SO obvious that you’re sort of mind-blown about how you never thought of them before.
This is one of them.
We’ve got a new Side Chat for you where we’re talking about the unconscious habit that SO many of us are doing all the time … and how badly it sabotages us.
This one’s for you if …
- You want to know why arguments are so frustrating and rarely go anywhere.
- You’re unsatisfied by the choices you have in front of you (or have already made).
- You’d like to uncover the ways in which you’re probably limiting yourself from some seriously good opportunities, without even realizing it.
- You often feel compelled to prove yourself.
- You’ve ever thought, “I can’t make money AND pursue my passion.”
- … and more, of course.
It’s about 20 minutes, which is the perfect length for your commute, a short walk, or a break from the office.

And after you’ve listened … share your personal examples, in the comments!

NEVER HEARD OF SIDE CHATS?
As you can imagine, when two best friends run a business together, there’s SO MUCH MORE good stuff — insights, revelations, struggles — that we’re talking about behind the scenes than what you’re reading in blog posts and #ClarityGems.
Our random back-and-forth conversations — while we’re supposed to be “working,” while we’re eating tacos, while we’re chilling in sweatpants on the couch — aren’t planned at all, and that’s why they’re good … anything can and does come up.
We always find ourselves having these good conversations and thinking, “It’d be cool if people could listen in to this, fly-on-the-wall style.”
So, we decided to just press “record” and start sharing with you.
We’re calling these “Clarity on Fire Side Chats,” and there’s no big plan for them. When inspiration hits, which is usually at random, we’ll press record and share another with you. The freer it flows, the better it usually is, anyway!
Enjoy!
Much Love,
Kristen + Rachel
I love this talk and it’s so applicable in my life, especially right now. I find myself trying to make every decision in the black and white, justifying things as either right or wrong. In the last few months I’ve tried making a decision between moving out of state to attend a doctorate program OR starting a family. Applying for a master’s program OR starting my own online business. Deciding whether or not to go into my dream job and pursue it whole heartedly OR have children. This is a great reminder that hardly anything in life is mutually exclusive, and although you can’t always have everything all at once, you can prioritize and make all the things happen that are most important to yo.
I love that this was so timely for you, Alicia! You’re so right — hardly anything in life is mutually exclusive. Maybe you don’t want all of the things all at once (which would be totally understandable!), but it doesn’t mean you have to choose between having a family and having a career you love (or whatever other black-and-white decisions you find yourself facing). The “both/and” concept opens up SO many more possibilities, if you’re willing to change your perspective. Thanks for sharing your examples!
This is very relevant to me right now ! A few weeks ago you all wrote a post on “Active Waiting” and that resonated with me to at least buy the domain for my blog…But then I am overwhelmed with starting my blog OR starting my business; and if I do both will I have enough time to focus on both so they can flourish OR should I just go back to school for my MBA. Figuring out what to start with first is just frustrating, Sigh :-/
The big question that comes to mind after reading your comment is: “Why can’t your blog and your business be the same thing?” I certainly don’t know enough to give an informed opinion, but you can always start a blog that then builds into a business! After all, Clarity on Fire is both a blog and a business! 🙂
I’m definitely more afraid of stagnation. I know I’m not afraid of the unknown because I had the balls to move to Colorado without a job because I knew I’d figure something out and this is where I wanted to be. Now that I’m here and I have a paycheck and I’m surviving, I’m trying not to focus on the next steps. I think I’m not following through on the things I need to do before 9am and after 5pm. I need to keel learning and experimenting with new skills so I can explore new career paths. It’s just too easy to give myself days to “relax” or go out with friends, then I don’t have time to work towards a change, but I’m still complaining about my situation.
This was a good thinking exercise. Thank you.
Glad this got you thinking, Kristen! The fact that you’re SO conscious of the changes you need/want to make (plus the fact that you’re afraid of stagnation) means you won’t be able to avoid them for long without feeling hugely uncomfortable. Also, I can’t help but think — maybe your before-9am-and-after-5pm hours don’t need to be exclusively about relaxation OR working to make a change. What would it look like to have a balance of BOTH?
I just started looking in to doing blogging. I want to thank you up front for putting all this amazing information out here for us want-to-bees! My problem is I have no idea what most of these terms mean! With out a very basic understanding I really don’t know how to get started. How do I find step #1? 2? etc? I don’t really understand what a blog is. I am very comfortable with writing , I think I have ideas and stories that may be interesting to others. I would very much appreciate being pointed in the right direction. If you could just help me open the door into the blogging world I would be in your debt!!! thank you for your time and interest!
