I’m slightly ashamed to admit that I used to daydream about winning the lottery. Or being awarded a grant that I never had to pay back. Or receiving a HUGE check from an anonymous stranger. Doesn’t really matter how I ended up getting the money, I was stuck on the fantasy that it would be so much easier to build my business and live a life full of freedom if I had a BIG pile of cash.
Shockingly enough, that never happened. And I’m really glad that it didn’t.
Because landing a big pile of money would have been a shortcut. It would have been the equivalent of pressing “fast forward” … sure, it would have gotten me where I wanted to be a lot quicker, but it would have come at a much greater expense that I’d never considered.
I DON’T BLAME MYSELF FOR HAVING BEEN IMPATIENT
There’s nothing fun about seeing the long road ahead and realizing how much you haven’t yet accomplished and how difficult it might be to accomplish it. It’s exhausting, overwhelming, and stressful … anyone would probably want to fast forward when they’re feeling that way.
But eventually, when I saw that there was no Knight in Shining Armor dressed as a Big Pile of Money coming to rescue me, I had to do the far more valuable thing … I had to figure things out for myself.
Going from full-time employed by someone else to full-time employed by yourself has a learning curve that’s very steep, and I had to navigate it. Marketing, legalities, time management, finding clients, building websites, managing money … you name it, and I (and Kristen) learned it.
And in the struggle of mastering what I hadn’t known, a funny thing happened:
I BECAME QUALIFIED TO HANDLE THE THING I WANTED MOST
If someone had just sped things up for me by handing me a huge check to put toward my business, the money would have disappeared practically overnight.
It’s like wanting to be in shape so badly that you skip to the part where you’re running marathons and benching heavy weights … there’s no way you’re going to pull it off if you haven’t built the strength you need to do it first.
I wasn’t qualified to handle that kind of success yet, and so I would have blown it. Big time.
Yeah, the time I spent learning, growing, and struggling was painful. But it built me the proverbial muscle that I needed to handle myself as a coach and businesswoman.
THIS IS TRUE EVEN IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU WANT
Almost everyone I’ve ever coached has started out feeling some form of stressed, overwhelmed, anxious, frustrated, or bored … and would give anything to skip over to the part where they’re happy, content, inspired, and purposeful.
But happiness, inspiration, passion, and purpose are things you need to be qualified to handle, too.
It’s normal to want someone to just tell you what your passion is, so that you can start living it and stop feeling stuck and unfulfilled. That would be pretty convenient.
But magically knowing your passion is very different than doing the work it takes to discover it for yourself.
Because like it or not, discovering your passion is like emotional weight training — you’ve got to put a significant amount of sweat into thinking, planning, experimenting, and deeply questioning your beliefs and values in life.
And while you’ve got to put in the work, no one said you needed to do it on your own.
THERE’S AT LEAST ONE LEGITIMATE WAY TO SPEED THINGS UP
Doesn’t matter if your goal is to get in shape, start eating healthy, figure out your passion in life, or anything else: The best legitimate way I know of to speed things up is to be guided by an expert.
There are plenty of people out there … personal trainers, nutritionists, authors, coaches, therapists, mentors … who can help you take the guesswork out of your journey.
Sure, you’ll still be putting in 100% of the work, but the supreme benefit is that you’ll know the work you’re putting in is going to pay off. You don’t have to constantly second-guess whether or not you did the right thing, which is a massive relief.
Personally, I’ve practiced the art of legitimately speeding things up many times. I’ve worked with personal trainers, life coaches, and business consultants. Kristen and I have invested in multiple books and online programs about business building. I’m not sure where I would be without the people and programs I’ve learned from, and I sincerely do not want to know.
THIS IS WHY I’M SO PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT WE DO
Yes, you’ve got to put in the work. There’s no doubt about that. But there’s no reason to struggle on your own to become “qualified” for whatever it is you want in life.
If what you want is to get in shape, eat healthy, become a world-renowned photographer, or learn how to code, then I hope you’ll find an excellent expert to help you legitimately speed up your learning curve.
And if what you want is to figure out your passion in life, then that’s exactly what we’re here to help you do. Our entire passion revolves around making it easy and clearing the way for other people find theirs.
THE PASSION PLAN VIRTUAL EXPERIENCE IS FINALLY BACK
If you didn’t know already, today is the first day of enrollment for our much-loved online course, the Passion Plan Virtual Experience.
The whole point is to figure out your passion and start taking action in just 4 weeks. It’s simple, affordable … and very powerful. Here are a few snippets that people have shared with us:
“This program has completely changed my life. People ask me why I invested in coaching, and I always tell them, ‘I couldn’t afford not to.’ I got where I was going so much faster than I ever would have by myself.” – Ashlee K.
“I so appreciate and love everything you both have put into this course. I feel like it came at exactly the right time for me, and every week my decision to take part has been reaffirmed and solidified. I’m honestly not sure how I could have begun my year any better, and how wonderful is that?” – Heather M.
“I came in to the PPVE thinking it might be too basic for me, because I really hated my situation and felt I needed SERIOUS help, but I was blown away by how much it changed me and my life!” – Anne E.
If you’re in the “I’m stressed, overwhelmed, and have no idea what I want” boat, then I hope you’ll consider joining us. Enrollment will be open for the next week (it closes on Tuesday, May 5th. We won’t be bringing it back until the fall).
And as a huge thanks for all of the excitement we’ve been getting about this, the first 50 people who enroll are getting the Virtual Experience for $299, instead of the regular $369.
If you want to make sure you’re one of the first 50, you can enter a code during checkout. There are 2 different codes – FIRSTFIFTY1 for the 1-payment option, and FIRSTFIFTY2 for the 2-payment option. (Spots fill up quickly in this course, and it looks like the first 50 will be filled by the end of the day.)
Here’s to figuring out your passion, taking action, and speeding things up the right way.
Much Love,
Rachel (+ Kristen)
